NUTRITION

 Hi kids!

Let's review what we have learnt about Nutrition.

Nutrition is one of our three life processes. Our body needs oxygen and nutrients and also to eliminate waste.

The body systems involved in this process are: THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM, THE EXCRETORY SYSTEM, THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM AND THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM.

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

It helps us to get nutrients from the food and elimate the waste.

The food gets in our body throug the MOUTH. In the mouth, the teeth break down the food and the tongue mixes it with saliva. When we swallow, the food goes down the ESOPHAGUS into the STOMACH. In the stomach, gastric juices make the food into a thick liquid. In the SMALL INTESTINE, nutrients pass into the blood and the waste go through the LARGE INTESTINE where it becomes harder and leaves our body through the ANUS.

Let's watch this video:

EXCRETORY SYSTEM

It helps us to get rid of the excess liquid in our body.

It is made up of : two kidneys, two ureters, one bladder and one urethra.

The KIDNEYS filter the blood. Then, excess water and waste are made into urine. Urine  goes down the URETERS into the BLADDER. When the bladder is full, it sends a message to our brain. The urine leaves our body through the URETHRA when we go to the toilet.

Let's watch this video,

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

It helps us get oxygen from the air.

It is made up of the NOSE, WINDPIPE (OR TRACHEA), THE BRONQUI and THE LUNGS.

When we breathe in, the air goes into the NOSE through  the NOSTRILS. In the nostrils, little hairs stop foreign objects to enter our respiratory system. The air goes down the WINDPIPE. The windpipe divides into two tubes called BRONQUI. The bronqui go into the LUNGS. The lungs are like big sacks, they are squidgy and are made up of lots of little bags called ALVEOLI suronded by blood capillaries. The air goes into the alveoli. In the alveoli, Oxygen goes in and carbon dioxide goes out.

When we breathe, we use our DIAPHRAGM.

When we breathe IN, the diaphragm goes DOWN and the chest gets BIGGER.

When we breathe OUT, the diaphragm goes UP and the chest gets SMALLER.

Let's watch this video!

CIRCULATORY SYTEM

The circulatory system transports BLOOD (that includes nutrients and oxygen) to every part of our body.

It is made up of the HEART and the BLOOD VESSELS.

It is functioning day and night.

HEART. It is a muscle the pumps the blood. Every time it pumps is called a HEARTBEAT. The more oxygen we need, the faster our heart beats.

BLOOD VESSELS can be VEINS, ARTERIES AND CAPILLARIES.

VEINS: return the blood back to the heart.

ARTERIES: carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body.

CAPILLARIES: Tiny blood vessels where the blood gives nutrients and oxygen to the cells in our body and also picks up waste products and carbon dioxide.

BLOOD is made up of: PLASMA,RED CELLS, WHITE CELLS AND PLATELETS.

PLASMA    It is a watery liquid that carries  nutrients and also red cells, white cells and platelets.

    RED CELLS They carry oxygen.

    WHITE CELLS They fight infection.

PLATELETS They help the blood to clot and for  scabs.
